Huron County OPP laid 44 speeding charges during a long weekend road safety enforcement campaign.
In all, 73 charges were laid against drivers on Huron OPP patrolled roads.
The campaign was aimed at distracted drivers, but there were no distracted driving charges in Huron over the weekend. There were two marine charges, and one alcohol warn range suspension.
Four collisions occurred during the campaign, two involving animals on the road, one involving a driver who fell asleep, and one a minor parking lot fender bender.
South Bruce OPP laid 26 speeding charges and investigated 1 motor vehicle collision during the campaign. There were no injuries reported in the crash.
Wellington County OPP laid a total of 19 distracted driving charges and 72 speeding charges. Officers also investigated 28 motor vehicle collisions during the campaign but fortunately, none resulted in injuries.
"19 distracted driving charges is an indicator that many drivers are still not getting the message that distracted driving kills. While the campaign period may have come to an end, our officers will continue to look for these drivers who continue to put themselves and others at risk," says Inspector Scott Lawson.
Across Ontario, the OPP laid 444 distracted driving charges during the weekend, and close to 9,000 charges were laid so far this year.
However, summer was deadly on OPP patrolled roads across the province, with 92 fatalities, the highest number over for July and August since 2010.
Since the beginning of the year, 208 people have died in road crashes, 24 while boating, and 13 off roading fatalities.
