A school in Walkerton officially has a new name.
The Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board celebrated the renaming of Mother Teresa School in Walkerton Thursday, in recognition of the canonization of St. Teresa of Calcutta.
Events began with mass at Sacred Heart Parish Walkerton, followed by the official blessing and dedication at the school by Bishop Meihm.
Among the guests were representatives from the Missionaries of Charity in Toronto.
The Missionaries of Charity was established in 1950 by Saint Teresa of Calcutta, then known as Mother Teresa, and continues to serve the needs of communities around the world. Missionaries care for many including refugees, the mentally ill, sick and abandoned children, the aged, and convalescent.
The Sisters brought St. Teresa of Calcutta medals for all the students. They also brought a framed print of the official portrait of St.Teresa of Calcutta, which is displayed in the entrance of the school.
During mass, Bishop Miehm reminded the students and staff that the greatest way to honour St. Teresa and her works is by living a life of love as she did. He quoted St. Teresa’s words, "Let us always meet each other with a smile, for a smile is the beginning of love."
