Wellington County Students Join Poverty Challenge

Some Wellington County students are taking part in the second annual Poverty Challenge Wednesday at the University of Guelph.

The one day event is aimed at introducing students with the Upper Grand District School Board to the poverty issues faced by many citizens every day.

Community volunteers will help students experience, listen and learn about the realities of poverty.

Board spokesperson Heather Loney says the goal is to have the students become the voice of change in their communities in Wellington and Dufferin counties.

"After the poverty challenge, then these students go back to their schools, they become the voice of change, they help spread awareness of these issues, and they're also more aware. So they're there to help their fellow students, and offer support to fellow students," says Loney.

She says they decided to hold the event again this year, after a positive response from the last session.

"Students said this was a life changing experience. They said it was one of the most powerful field trips that they have ever been a part of. It really can open your eyes to the poverty that's right in our communities," says Loney.
