More Local Jobs Lost From March To April

The unemployment rate for the Stratford-to-Bruce Peninsula economic region fell last month.

It went from 6.8% to 6.1%, which drops the local rate below the provincial rate of 6.3%.

The four-county region recorded a total employment loss of 4,400 between March and April.  The decline was concentrated in part-time employment, with only a slight gain in full-time employment.

Employment gains were in business, building and other support services, finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing, and professional, scientific and technical services.

Both agriculture and utilities remained steady in the goods-producing sector last month.

Employment fell in the region’s service-producing sector.  The main contributors were wholesale and retail trade, educational services and accommodation and food services, and health care and social assistance.
