The Executive Director of Huron County's Food Bank Distribution Centre in Crediton says she's thrilled with the new walk-in freezer they were able to get with a 54-hundred dollar grant from the Trillium Foundation.
Huron-Bruce M-P-P Lisa Thompson, Huron County Warden Jim Ginn, South Huron Mayor Maureen Cole and the Trillium Foundation's Judy Keightley were among the dignataries at the ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning. Mary Ellen Zielman gives them a lot more space which is very important because in the past they've had to turn down offers of truckloads of frozen food. She says the new freezer can store a whole truckload.
But she adds it also makes handling the food easier because the volunteers can just walk in and get what they want without have to move other food out of the freezer and it allows them to store more frozen food as the need increases. Zielman says they have about 38 volunteers at the Distribution Centre and while they don't all work every week about 100 hours of work are put in every week.
Zielman says the Distribution couldn't operate without the efforts of the volunteers or without the kindness of Premium Transportation and their owners Mike and Kevin who provide the warehouse space at minimum rent and renovate when necessary to accommodate the Distribution Centre.
