Fundraiser Underway To Protect Historic Cemetery Near Owen Sound

A committee is working to raise $35,000 to put an iron fence around the St. Michael's Cemetery near Owen Sound.

The old fence around the rural cemetery on Irish Block Rd. in Annan has fallen down, leaving the grotto and sacred grounds vulnerable to vandals.

Volunteers are working together on the St. Michael’s Cemetery Project, which is a committee of St. Mary’s and the Missions Cemeteries Board. The group is also collecting stories and pictures for a history book related to the Irish Block Catholic Community from 1937 to present. That will build on a history booklet published in 1937 and covering back to 1847.

A celebration will take place next summer to commemorate the 170 year history of the Irish Block community, and the family and friends of the former St. Michael's Parish.

If anyone is interested in contributing to the project or for more information please contact Michael Traynor, Chair, St. Michael’s Cemetery Project Committee at 519-376- 8791 or traynorhomestead@gmail.com.
