Bruce Grey MPP Introduces Private Members Bill For Improved Long-Term Care Funding

Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker says his constituents are worried about the future of two long term care homes in his riding.

Walker has introduced a private member's bill asking that government funding for nursing homes doesn't fall below inflation.

He says 11,000 people have also signed a petition asking for improved long term care.

“This is evidence to the fact that this government has abdicated its responsibility to properly fund long term care, and leaving seniors to go without the care they need and deserve,” he says.

He says in just a few years that number will double to 50,000.

"I don't know how, Mr. Speaker, this government ca sit back and watch the 'Grey Tsunami' coming at it, and not address it. My constituents, as well as the 11,000 Ontarians who signed the petition, believe long term care is going to get only worse, unless the government takes action now. I believe our seniors deserve better," he said.

He adds one in five seniors in long-term care are malnourished due to chronic underfunding.

Grey County is considering closing Grey Gables in Markdale, and merging services with Rockwood at a new building in Durham.
