Young Canada Week Begins Tonight

The puck drops on the 68th annual Goderich Lions Young Canada Week Pee Wee Hockey Tournament tonight at seven o'clock.

Publicity Chair Richard Madge says they have 32 teams this year, about the same number as last year.   And they'll use the same format as last year;  one group of teams play all of the games on the first weekend with winners declared by Sunday night and then the second group of teams will come in the following weekend and start their tournament on that Friday night.

Madge points out that frees up the March Break for the players and their families and that format was pretty popular when they tried it last year.

The official opening ceremonies start at 7 p.m.

The Goderich Lions are very involved with guide dogs for people with visual impairments or other special needs and hopefully one of their guide dogs will help drop the puck at centre ice. Madge says the challenge for the dog is that they're trained to pick things up, not drop them, so they're not sure at this point if the guide dog understands the procedure.

A complete schedule and scores can be found on the Young Canada Week web site.
