ABCA Adding New Info To Storm Messaging For Shoreline Erosion

The Water and Planning Manager for the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority says they'll be adding some new information to their storm messaging this year.

Alec Scott explains that flooding in the past has primarily been an issue for rivers and streams, but a storm last November created some serious erosion problems along the shoreline. Scott points out lake levels had been at all-time lows for about fifteen years until they rose dramatically about three years ago, and the highwater levels are now capable of causing erosion problems along the shoreline in some storm situations.

Scott adds in most cases there's little that can be done to reduce the erosion, but it was felt they should at least advise owners of shoreline property when there is a chance a storm could result in shoreline erosion. Scott also points out those storms and the risk of shoreline erosion will likely be more frequent as lake levels remain high.

Scott says the municipalities affected would be Lambton Shores, South Huron, Bluewater and Central Huron, and while there isn't much municipal infrastructure that would be at risk the municipalities might end up getting calls from people who had lost part of their shoreline.
