Avon Maitland School Director Calls Fraser Institute Rankings Incomplete

The director of education for the Avon Maitland District School Board says the board doesn't believe the school rankings released recently by the Fraser Institute have much validity.

Ted Doherty says the system used by the Fraser Institute considers only a very small part of the factors that make up a complete picture and don't reflect what's really happening in Ontario schools.

Avon Maitland schools did not fair well in the rankings, but Doherty counters by saying they don't believe in ranking schools or students. He says the board instead focuses on student progress and improvement.

Doherty adds the board looks at several other factors that are not considered by the Fraser Institute and so they don't believe the Fraser Institute rankings have any validity.

Doherty maintains that tracking students and their progress is a much more accurate way of measuring success than ranking schools which he says totally misrepresents their student population.
