Stratford Police Will Review Sexual Assault Cases

Stratford police will conduct a comprehensive review of all sexual assault cases reported to them between 2010 to 2016 to ensure there were no gaps in the investigations.

With statistics showing nearly half of sexual assault cases reported to Stratford police are classified as "unfounded," police want to assure residents that they do not treat sexual assault cases lightly, and that their focus is the safety and well being of the victims.

In a release, the police service stresses that sexual assaults are one of the most traumatic crimes a person can experience.

Stratford Police Chief Mike Bellai says they are committed to bringing those responsible for sexual assault crimes to justice. He adds victims must be confident their dignity and best interests are important to the police service when a crime is reported.

The police service will also review how cases are recorded and reported to ensure statistical accuracy.
