Goderich Considering 'Blue Community' Program

The Town of Goderich could soon be a Blue Community.

Jennifer Pate of the Blue Community in Bayfield explained the program to Goderich councillors Monday night.

She said a municipality first must declare water as a human right, then stop using bottled water in municipally-owned buildings or at municipal events. She added that the municipality must also oppose the private sale of water.

A bylaw to become a Blue Community was supported in principal by councillors and referred to staff to work out details before officially becoming a Blue Community.

Pate also pointed out that where there is a need for water in a bottle, reusable bottles with the municipality's logo on them can actually be an income generator and an effective promotional tool for the municipality.
