Attracting More Immigrants To Huron County

The Huron County's Economic Development Board says it is now in the early stages of actively trying to attract more immigrants to Huron County.

Immigration Partnership Project Manager Kristen Crane says employers are telling her they need more people, and the birth rate in Huron County hasn't gone up in some time, so the solution has to be immigration.

Crane points out most immigrants that come to Ontario settle in Toronto and have no idea where Huron County is, or what opportunities are available here.

She says the key is informing people before they've settled on a career path that Huron County wants them and can offer a quality of life they won't find in the city.

With that in mind, the board is now working with the Newcomer Centre of Peel in hopes of persuading immigrants to consider the benefits of settling in Huron County.

Crane concedes that when people move from a city like Toronto to a rural community in Huron County there are some things they won't find here, and some compromises will have to be made. But she says Huron County also has a lot to offer that isn't available in a large city, so their job is to focus on what Huron County has -- rather than what it doesn't have.
