North Perth Supports Plan For Temporary Foreign Workers

North Perth will support an application from local industry to bring in temporary foreign workers.

A meeting between the regions largest employers, North Perth staff, the local MP, and the mayor was held recently and they decided to explore an application to the foreign workers program, with the anticipation some would apply for citizenship.

Snell says employers are finding it difficult to sustain the necessary workforce to maintain continuity or expand.

CAO Chris Snell says most of the positions are factory level, but he adds the labour shortage in their region is far reaching.

"At times we have needs for professionals, high skilled labour, as well as entry labour, and we have a difficult time attracting for all sectors," says Snell.

Snell says with an unemployment rate hovering around 3%, most people in the area are already working.

North Perth is one of the fastest growing communities in the region.

"Our industry is really busy. But we still need more employees than we currently have," he explains. "We're working with the county and the City of Stratford and the Town of St. Marys. We've partnered to create the Opportunity Lives Here website, which is opportunityliveshere.ca. it does have all the potential jobs available in the area, as well as information on our communities, and available apartments to rent."

The website has seen about 14,000 visits.

The municipality also attends local and out of area job fairs to attract workers.
