A watershed conditions statement has been issued by the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority.
The overnight rainfall of about 20 mm between Wednesday and Thursday will cause the levels of watercourses in the Maitland and Nine Mile River watersheds to rise, and remain elevated for several days.
Total runoff from rain and snow melt has been estimated at 45 mm.
Levels in streams and rivers may reach, or exceed, bank full conditions. That could result in minor flooding in low-lying areas.
Municipal staff are monitoring problem areas and are prepared for closures of low-lying roads.
Flows may peak quickly and begin to recede by Friday, but will remain elevated throughout the weekend.
Slippery and unstable streambanks and the cold water temperature will create hazardous conditions around all watercourses.
