A Grade 6 teacher at Goderich Public School says coding is the future for today's students.
Heather Durnin refers to it as "looking under the hood."
Durnin explains her students use an app called Swift Playgrounds on their I-pad and it teaches them to choose a character, write some commands, and get the character to accomplish a goal that the game has set. She says it would help anyone because it teaches them to break the problem down into manageable tasks, and then write the code or commands that will solve that problem. And Durnin points out that's a process that these students will need in the world they're going to live in.
Darcie Brohman says she's convinced in the future society will be based on coding and being comfortable with it will help him solve problems and get a better job.
Olivia Allen says she thinks coding is a lot of fun and helps people relax when they're feeling a little stressed.
Durnin adds they realize all students are not going to have a future in coding but learning how to use it will help them understand how technology works, as well as appreciating that there's often more than one way to solve a problem, and having a comfortable relationship with coding will help them find the one that works best for them.
