Report Shows More Ontarians Should Get Cancer Screening Tests

A new report shows Ontario Cancer Screening in the south west region could be improved.

It's estimated more than 6,700 people will be diagnosed with cancer in the region this year. And although certain cancers can be prevented, data shows many eligible Ontarians aren't up to date with their screening tests.

The Ontario Cancer Screening Performance Report 2016 evaluates the screening programs for breast, cervical and colon cancer.

About 43% of eligible men and women in the South west are overdue for colorectal cancer screening. Around 63% of eligible women got the recommended cervical cancer screening in 2014, and 78% of eligible women were screened for breast cancer in Ontario in 2013/2014

“Screening detects pre-cancerous changes or cancers at an early stage when they are easier to treat,” says Dr. Jan Owen, regional primary care lead for the South West Regional Cancer Program. “That’s why we encourage all Ontarians to speak with their doctor to find out if they’re eligible or overdue for screening.”

The findings in this report will be used to inform evidence-based and locally relevant strategies to strengthen cancer screening in Ontario.
