Huron County Residents Support Land Stewardship

The coordinator for Huron County's Stewardship Council credits the county and the residents of the county for much of the success of the program.

Rachell White explains the Stewardship Council was formed in 1995 as part of the Ontario Stewardship program and supported by the Ministry of Natural Resources. She says in 2011 the council became its own incorporated not-for-profit group and recently formed a partnership with the county.

The council is run by a board of volunteers who live in the county and they take on projects related to bio-diversity, youth initiatives, land stewardship and partnership building.

White adds they have several community partners and recently worked with the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority and area elementary school students and scouts to plant trees.

She points out none of that would be possible without the help of landowners who are interested in creating wetlands, planting trees and creating buffer strips around waterways

White adds the county has been a huge supporter in providing funding to landowners for up to 50% of the cost of a project and the Stewardship Council can often find other sources of funding to increase that fifty per cent.

Any property owners interested in projects on their land can get more information at the Huron Stewardship Council website.
