Southgate Puts Proposed Fill Bylaw On Hold

Southgate has decided to back off on plans for a bylaw to regulate the movement of fill, in the face of strong opposition from township farmers.

One petition in opposition contained 206 signatures.

The Egremont/Proton Federation of Agriculture is also opposed.

Local residents complained that such a bylaw would have micromanaged everything from the removal of fence rows to the removal of stone piles and the trimming of trees.

Council was in agreement that it would do nothing on a fill bylaw, and wait to see what the province plans to do about the movement of fill which often involves construction fill coming out of cities and being dumped in rural areas.
