Airborne Car Smashes Into Tree At Kelso Campground

A section of the Eddie Sargent Pkwy. in Owen Sound was closed for several hours early Monday morning because of a single-vehicle crash.

Emergency services personnel responded to a call around 2:35am after a car smashed into a tree in the 1700-block.

Officers found a 2012 Mazda sedan completely destroyed and resting on its roof at the base of a tree in the Kelso Campground.

The lone occupant of the car was able to crawl out from the driver’s seat.  He was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Police determined that the vehicle was travelling at a high rate of speed when it went airborne after crossing the bridge at the Pottawatomi River. The vehicle then crossed into southbound lanes, struck a utility pole, knocked out several wooden posts and struck the tree and came to rest.

The 25-year-old Georgian Bluffs man is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

The Eddy Sargent Pkwy. was closed for about four hours.

Witnesses had spotted the vehicle travelling north from 14th St. W at an extremely high rate of speed.  They followed the vehicle’s path and came upon the crash scene and called 911 immediately.
