Environment Critic Accuses Government Of Ignoring Complaints To Environmental Registry

The PC environment critic says the Environment Ministry has a seven-year backlog for posting decisions and comments to the Environmental Bill of Rights registry.

The MPP for Huron Bruce questioned the environment minister about the information released in the environmental commissioner's annual report.

Lisa Thompson says the government is ignoring complaints about everything from raw sewage to wind turbines that date back to 2009.

The commissioner raised the same issues back in June, pointing to 686 outdated notices.

She says it sets up a disturbing pattern of ignoring the safety and environmental rights of residents.

Thompson says the Environment Minister still will not provide a timeline as to when the decisions and comments will be posted.

"It's absolutely shameful that this government still hasn't taken steps to remedy the situation that they have been well aware of for some time," says Thompson. "Ontarians rely on the EBR to keep them informed of issues in their communities that may impact their quality of life. It is unreasonable for this Minister to continue to ignore the need for real progress - this government's poor performance has gone on for too long. The minister has a responsibility to address these outstanding issues immediately."
