More than a dozen representatives from service clubs across Ontario appeared before the Standing Committee on Social Policy Monday afternoon to discuss government bureaucracy that impedes the work of their organizations.
The all-party committee hearing was the result of a Private Member's Resolution introduced by Simcoe-Grey MPP Jim Wilson in February 2015. That resolution, which received the unanimous support of MPPs at Queen's Park, called on the government to strike a committee to investigate the legislative and regulatory barriers and burdens facing service clubs.
Appearing before the committee Monday were representatives from Rotary International, Kiwanis International, Lions Club International, as well as local Kinsmen and Lions Clubs.
Now that the committee has met, the research officer will provide a summary of oral presentations and written submissions.
Wilson promised to continue lobbying the government to implement changes that benefit service clubs.
"Service clubs touch us all. They raise money for our hospitals. They support local sports teams. They build playground equipment. It's imperative that we do everything we can to make it easier for clubs to meet their mandates," Wilson says. "Our communities are always better off when our service clubs are successful."
