Ellice Swamp Fire Now Under Control

Perth East fire fighters and crews with the Upper Thames Conservation Authority made good progress Wednesday controlling the Ellice Swamp fire.

The conservation authority says 11 tanker trucks of water were used Thursday while fighting the fire.

The fire chief with the Perth East Fire Department's Milverton Station, Kim Newbigging, says access to the site is very difficult with the only way in being by ATV or Gator on a snowmobile trail.

Jason Belfry, land management technician with the Upper Thames Conservation Authority, says getting water in to the area to suppress the outer edge of the fire has made a huge difference.

"Now that we have the perimeter under control we are going in for the hot spots in the deeper sections which are quite a bit hotter and take a lot more water to put it out," says Belfry.

Conservation authority crews will be working with Perth East fire fighters again today dousing hot spots along the perimeter.

The public is being asked to stay away from the Ellice Swamp so that staff can concentrate on containing the fire.
