The Avon Maitland District School Board is keeping pace with provincial gains in literacy in province wide standardized testing.
In Grades 3 and 6, reading and writing scores trailed slightly behind provincial averages.
Results from the Education Quality and Accountability Office show 70% of Grade 3 students met or exceeded provincial standards in reading and writing. 65% of Grade 3 students made the grade in math, which is ahead of the provincial average.
In Grade 6, 79% are meeting the mark in reading; 75% in writing; and 46% in math.
In Grade 9 math, 48% of applied students succeeded, while 83 per cent of Academic students scored results at or above the standard.
Province-wide, 45% of students in the Applied math course met the provincial standard; and 83% of students in the academic math program did so.
74% passed the Grade 10 literacy test.
A release from the Avon Maitland Board says primary and junior mathematics are now a higher priority in improvement planning at the provincial, board and school levels.
