EQAO Results Prompt Avon Maitland School Board To Review Math Programs

The Avon Maitland District School Board is keeping pace with provincial gains in literacy in province wide standardized testing.

In Grades 3 and 6, reading and writing scores trailed slightly behind provincial averages.

Results from the Education Quality and Accountability Office show 70% of Grade 3 students met or exceeded provincial standards in reading and writing. 65% of Grade 3 students made the grade in math, which is ahead of the provincial average.

In Grade 6, 79% are meeting the mark in reading;  75% in writing;  and 46% in math.

In Grade 9 math, 48% of applied students succeeded, while 83 per cent of Academic students scored results at or above the standard.

Province-wide, 45% of students in the Applied math course met the provincial standard; and 83% of students in the academic math program did so.

74% passed the Grade 10 literacy test.

A release from the Avon Maitland Board says primary and junior mathematics are now a higher priority in improvement planning at the provincial, board and school levels.
