Unemployment Spikes In Midwestern Ontario

Unemployment increased nearly a full percentage point in the Stratford to Bruce Peninsula economic region.

The Four County Labour Market Planning Board says the rate jumped to 5.1% in August, from 4.2% the month before.

That is the first increase since March, and it was a larger increase than the provincial average.

Across Ontario, the jobless rate rose from 6.5% in July, to 6.9% in August.

However, the number of jobs in our region also increased by 1,000 to 143,700.

Goods and services saw marginally higher job numbers, with highest gains in Agriculture, which provided an extra 1,400 jobs.

Information culture and technology gained 700 jobs, but public administration lost 700.

Manufacturing lost 300 jobs, educational services saw a loss of 1,500 positions, and public, professional technical and scientific services lost 1,300 jobs. Goods-producing and Services-producing sectors saw 1,000 new positions

Youth volunteers practice coastal conservation

Nine young volunteers aged 11 to 17 spent three days exploring and protecting the Lake Huron coastline during the Coastal Conservation Youth Corps' inaugural program in Grand Bend from July 21 to 23.
