Local health officials are reminding people to protect themselves from mosquitoes as we head into the last long weekend of the summer.
One major concern for many people is the possibility of West Nile virus, which can be spread through a mosquito bite.
Wearing long sleeved clothing while outdoors is just one way to minimize your exposure to mosquitoes.
"Any infected mosquitoes can actually transmit West Nile virus, so you'll want to wear long sleeved shirts and long pants and you'll also want to try and minimize the time spent outdoors at dusk and dawn because that's when mosquitoes are more active," says Keshia Hackett , public health inspector with the Huron County Health Unit.
Other measures that can be taken to minimize exposure to the pesky critters include removing standing water around your property fro areas such as old tires, bird baths, barrels, or other items that any collect water.
Some West Nile virus symptoms can include fever, headache, stiff neck, weak muscles, mild rashes or swollen glands.
No cases of West Nile have been found in any mosquitoes in Huron County.
