Goderich councillors have asked staff to prepare a report on the possibility of setting up a youth committee or council in the town.
The idea was presented by councillor Trevor Bazinet who said that many of the young people he spoke with felt marginalized because they didn't believe they had a voice in what goes on in Goderich.
Bazinet suggested something along the lines of a school council where interested young people could meet on a regular basis and discuss what they'd like to see in Goderich and then periodically bring a report back to council.
Bazinet suggests parents would have to be involved as well to encourage young people to commit to the idea but he says since he brought the idea to council over ten parents and young people have contacted him to express their interest.
He adds if young people were able to present ideas to council and have a say in some of the decisions they might be more inclined to stay in Goderich or at least return to Goderich at some point.
Bazinet says once the report is presented to council his hope is that they can reach out to the schools, the Y and any recreational ground to recruit young people who would be interested in sitting on the committee.
