Varna Seeks Grants For Water System Upgrades

Huron County's Source Protection program has been able to save some money for Varna residents.

Supervisor Jenna Allain explains Varna residents get their water from a community well that is owned by the Varna Waterworks Association.  They asked the Municipality of Bluewater to take over ownership of the well a couple of years ago.

Allain points out the standards for a municipal system are more stringent than those for a community system and there is a cost involved in bringing the well up to those standards.

She adds it also has to be included in the local source protection plan and that means defining a well-head source protection area.

The Varna Waterworks Association has assumed the cost of upgrading the system and applications have been submitted on their behalf to the Federal and Provincial governments.

But there is also a cost in the delineation of the well-head protection area and Allain says they've been successful in obtaining funding for that so that cost can be removed from the budget for upgrading the well.

Allain adds that's only about 52 thousand dollars, but says any way they can reduce the cost of the process will help.
