Costs Rise For Planned Residential Hospice of Grey Bruce

Fundraisers will need to bring in an extra half a million dollars to build a permanent home for the Residential Hospice of Grey Bruce.

Officials say the 3.5 million dollar construction cost estimate from last July will not be enough to incorporate features crucial to patient comfort and safety.

The new campaign goal is now $4 million.

That will help create additional square footage to serve more patients from the region and ensure a proper ventilation system.  It will also cover energy efficiency requirements, rising material costs, and drainage solutions.

The goal is to have the necessary money raised by the end of the year.

Board chair Rob Cordell says "while there is some humility in notifying the community that our initial estimate was a touch ambitious in hindsight, hopefully residents will understand that projecting a cost estimate with precision that far in advance is difficult, although it was necessary in order to begin approaching large donors like the Chapman family for their support".    He adds, "we were very vigilant in the process of reviewing costs on a line-by-line basis to ensure the dollars raised will be wisely spent".

Some costs of the project have already been mitigated by ‘in-kind’ donations.

Cordell adds, "we’re so grateful that the trades community has already stepped-up with significant donations from companies for things like site preparation, exterior finishes, windows and doors, cabinetry and so on.   These substantially offset some of the cost increases".
