Residents Urged To Take Precautions In Extreme Heat

With temperatures and humidex levels hitting extreme highs for the next several days, health officials in Huron, Bruce and Grey counties are urging residents to take precautions to prevent heat related illnesses.

Environment Canada issued a heat warning starting Thursday and extending through the weekend with temperatures are expected to be in the 30 C range with the humid index making it feel even warmer.

The Huron County Health Unit warns you can become ill from the heat if your body sweat can't release the heat as fast as it needs to. Risks are greatest for older adults, infants and young children, along with those who suffer from breathing or heart conditions. Working or exercising in the heat can also put you at risk.

Symptoms of heat illness include dizziness, fainting, nausea, headache, extreme thirst, rapid breathing and heartbeat. Anyone with symptoms should immediately move to a cool place and drink liquids. Heat stroke can lead to unconsciousness or confusion.

“We urge everyone to stay alert and take precautions," says Huron Public Health Nurse Donna Parsons. “Remember to frequently visit neighbours, friends and older family members, especially those who are chronically ill, to make sure that they are cool and hydrated."

The Grey Bruce Health Unit says residents should protect themselves by drinking plenty of cool liquids, especially water.

You can wear loose fitting, breathable, light coloured clothing, or reschedule outdoor plans. Take a break from the heat in a cool place or take a cool shower or bath. And never leave people or pets in a parked vehicle, or in direct sunlight.
