Goderich Beach Cigarette Butt Clean-Up Needs Volunteers

The Huron County Health Unit is looking for volunteers to help with a clean-up on Goderich's beaches.

Student Health Promoter Michael Roy says they're specifically targeting cigarette butts. He adds that cigarette butts are the most littered item in the world, and they just recently completed a clean-up where they picked up over 4,000 cigarette butts in less than an hour.

He says the filters in cigarette butts are non-degradable and can contain as many as 4,000 chemicals that can leach into the water system or be ingested by young children or pets that find them on the beach, as well as marine life.

Roy says it's ironic that people who would never thing of throwing a gum or chocolate bar wrapper on the beach think nothing of doing the same thing with a cigarette butt.

Anyone willing to help is asked to call the Huron County Health Unit at 482-3416, Extension 2031.

Volunteers are asked to meet on the Main Beach in Goderich on August 2nd, 2016 just before 5pm.

Roy also points out because the cigarette butts are not bio-degradable they hang around forever, so the more people they can get out to help the more butts they can get off the beach.
