Temperatures are going to break 30 degrees over the next couple of days.
That's triggered a Heat Warning from the Grey Bruce Health Unit and the Huron County Health Unit.
With day time highs over 30 and lows staying above 20, the conditions increase the risk of heat illness. Those that are affected the most are the very young, older adults, those who are active in the heat and people with preexisting health conditions.
Temperatures and humidex levels are expected to be extreme for the next several days. Getting too hot can make you sick and you can become ill from the heat if your body can't compensate for it and properly cool you off. When the humidity is high, sweat won't evaporate as quickly, which keeps your body from releasing heat as fast as it may need to.
The health units have some tips to protect yourself and others from heat illnesses:
· If you have a health condition or are taking medication, ask your pharmacist or doctor if this increases your health risk in the heat.
· Drink plenty of cool liquids especially water before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration.
· Reschedule or plan outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day.
· Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing made of breathable fabric.
· Take a break from the heat by spending a few hours in a cool place.
· Take cool showers or baths until you feel refreshed.
· Never leave people or pets in your care inside a parked vehicle or in direct sunlight.
· Visit neighbours, friends and older family members to make sure they're cool and hydrated.
