Meaford council members have rejected the idea of reducing the size of their council.
The report, drawn up by Clerk Robert Tremblay, was one of many suggestions received during a series of public meetings on ways the municipality could save money.
Tremblay's report outlined how Meaford could save up to $50,000 a year by reducing the size of council from seven to five members.
But most members voiced their opposition to the idea.
Mayor Barbara Clumpus later told the media that reducing council by two members would mean each of the remaining five would have to tackle an increasingly heavy workload.
“Most of us come to council from day jobs and must read piles of documents before he meeting begins to bring ourselves up to speed," she says. "Each member of a smaller council would have even more work to catch up on.”
Mayor Clumpus added if a future council wants to revisit the idea they can bring it back to the table for discussion.
