Wingham Airport Operation to Remain with North Huron

It's all systems go for the Wingham Airport.

North Huron council is in favour of continuing to operate the Richard W. LeVan Municipal Airport just outside of Wingham.

With just two municipal airport in Huron County - one in Wingham and one in Goderich - North Huron council passed a motion to continue the airport operation and focus on future growth.

A feasibility study is under way to help determine future growth of the municipally-owned airport and future development according to Director of Recreation and Facilities, Pat Newson.

She says they're also looking at the possibility of shared services somewhere down the road:

"The other thing that we're looking at is Huron County Economic Development; looking at the municipally owned airports in Huron County and what they bring to the economic development opportunities in the county," says Newson.

The option to add new hangars to the airport may be revisited at a later date.

North Huron Reeve Neil Vincent shares the same sentiment about the airport, calling it a benefit to the region.

"Having it so that mechanical navigation is available especially for hospital transport, for either fixed wing or the helicopter, that's a big plus for our community," says Vincent.

The Richard W. LeVan Airport officially opened in 1996 and boasts a 4,000 ft. paved runway.
