Members of Legion Branch 32 now have a new home at Riverside Community Centre where they can meet each week.
And Legion branch President Steve Rice let Meaford council know this week how grateful he and fellow Legion comrades are for their help in finding a new home. Rice and second Vice-President Barb Maxwell came to Monday's council meeting to thank them for their help.
Rice also thanked municipal staff as well as the directors of the Riverside Community Centre for their efforts in helping Meaford Legion draft the agreement allowing the local Legion to meet at the Centre. Meaford Legion hasn't had a meeting place since November 2009 when they had to move out of their previous Hall in urban Meaford. The cost of repairing the aging building had become too much for Legion members to bear. After plans to build a seniors' housing development next to the Legion building fell through they had to sell the building to a private company.
Legion branch 32 has a one-year agreement with Riverside's board to use the Centre. Rice said Meaford Legion moved into the Centre and held their first meeting in May.
Legion directors are most happy to find a new home but haven't yet voted on extending the agreement on renting the centre.
