West Perth Releases Final Draft Of Recreation Master Plan

The West Perth Recreation and Leisure Master Plan is out and a new indoor pool is not recommended despite a high number of residents supporting the idea.

Monteith Brown Planning Consultants suggest an indoor pool needs a larger population to support it, which is something West Perth doesn't have. Even a modest indoor pool would increase taxes by about 10%.

The study also found that the single arena ice pad is well used with modest pressure for additional ice time. The report suggests the municipality should monitor increasing usage levels and take another look at ice demands in five to ten years time with an updated Needs Assessment/Feasibility Study for the Mitchell Arena.

It suggests West Perth quickly hire a Recreation and Leisure Coordinator position, re-evaluate staffing requirements over time, create a recreation guide and facilitate volunteerism.

Other ideas include the development of an arts and culture strategy, adopt a parkland per resident ratio, and prepare a greening strategy.

The master plan lays out which service or facility recommendation needs immediate attention, and where West Perth should consider the the project a short or long term goal.
