Huron Warden Shocked By U.S. Water Diversion Decision

Huron County Warden Paul Gowing says he was surprised by the decision of the eight Great Lakes states.

They granted the request of Waukesha Wisconsin to divert water out of Lake Michigan.

The vote came after significant opposition to the proposal at last week's Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative conference in Niagara Falls.

Gowing says he came away from that conference confident the request would be denied. He felt there was plenty of opposition from American officials at the Cities Initiative meeting.

The eight Great Lakes states unanimously approved the request in a vote Tuesday.

Gowing maintains there were alternatives available to Waukasha that were more cost effective than diverting water from Lake Michigan for it's municipal supply. He's afraid this will open the door to more requests.
