Bear Sightings Up In Huron County

Huron County Animal Control Officer Bob Trick says the number of bear sightings in Huron County this year is well above previous years.

Trick says there have been about five in the last couple of weeks and he believes because of the area they've covered it's not just the same bear moving around. Trick points to sightings near Kippen, Auburn, Bayfield, Turnbull Grove near Grand Bend and Port Albert. Trick says that's too wide an area for one bear and he adds one bear is noticeably larger than the others.

Trick believes the increased number of bears this far south is because finding food in their normal habitat has been very difficult this spring but food is readily available here. He cautions people against leaving garbage or pet food outside because they have an exceptionally good sense of smell so if there is food around, they'll find it.

Trick also points out bears lose about have of their body weight during hibernation so they have to eat a lot to get that back.
