Owen Sound High School Plan Challenged

There are a lot of angry people in Owen Sound over a Bluewater School Board decision.

About 120 people showed up to a meeting, organized by the Save OSCVI Committee, to find a way to get the board to reverse or at least delay the amalgamation of the Owen Sound's two public high schools.

OSCVI is to become an elementary school and as of September, all high school kids will go to West Hill.

Meeting organizer Judy Keeling says they can't take the board's decision sitting down.

"It behooves every person that cares about their community to stand up and say something when they think what's happening is wrong," says Keeling.

The group has filed an appeal with the province to review the decision to close OSCVI or at least slow the whole process down.

Keeling hopes board trustees do something first.

"I hope that we don't even have to go through this process with the Ministry.  It would be ideal if the trustees would sit down and say, 'This was too rash, we need to look at it again.' "

According to the appeal process the Bluewater Board has until the middle of this month to respond to the appeal.  After that, the province has until mid July to decide what action to take, if any.

People opposed to the amalgamation of the high schools in Owen Sound are urged by the committee to contact their Bluewater board trustee and make their concerns known.
