OPP Commissioner Vince Hawkes was in Kincardine today to dedicate a bridge in the name of a fallen constable.
Constable Craig Campbell was killed August 3, 1985 as he was searching for an impaired driving suspect on Highway 9.
A vehicle rounded a corner without headlights, lost control, and hit the cruiser broad side.
Hawkes explains what happened, "The suspect was found to be impaired and was driving with a suspended license. His action that day also resulted in the deaths of 2 other passengers. But as we all know, policing is a profession with inherent risks. And regardless of this, men and women become officers and take a solemn oath to serve and protect. Constable Craig Campbell gave his life all those years ago in the service of the people of Ontario. "
His Wife Leslie Parsons spoke at the service about Campbell's heroic actions.
She says, "Given his intelligence, his education, his strong work ethic and morales, and his wonderfully supportive family, Craig could of gone anywhere and done anything with his life, but he chose to become a police officer and serve the citizens of Ontario. I think that's pretty heroic."
A bridge on Highway 21 has been named in honour of Constable Craig Campbell.
