A Kincardine angler has the biggest catch so far at the Fish Kincardine Derby.
Steve Glover reeled in a 16.52 lb trout on the first day, and it's also the biggest fish overall. The top salmon at this point was caught by Tiverton's Phil Hahn at 16.34 lbs.
Meanwhile, the trout being caught may be some released into the water by the Kincardine Hatchery.
Krista Holtby, a volunteer at the Lake Huron Fishing Club Trout Hatchery, says re-entering trout back into the environment is their main priority.
"Here we raise rainbow and brown trout, and look after fertilizing and maintaining the eggs, feeding the fish until they grow to a decent size," she says. "We just released a bunch of rainbow at Denny Dam. The brown spawn in the fall, so we will wait until that time to release more of them into the river."
The Ministry of Natural Resources has specific guidelines for releasing the fish, and Holtby says it's based on the previous year's losses.
"We get direction from them as far as the numbers, as they're able to calculate how many eggs and fish we need based on the amount caught in previous years," says Holtby.
