North Huron's Julie Sawchuk was one of the participants in Thursday's Huron County Bicycle Friendly Community Workshop in Holmesville.
Her presence there was monumental in that nine month's ago, the biology teacher at F-E Madill in Wingham was struck by a vehicle near Carlow as she was riding her bicycle.
She suffered a fractured skull, a broken back and neck and is now confined to a wheel chair.
Sawchuk says she's doing as much therapy as possible to return some function to her core muscles and that's coming along well.
She also does some swimming and she goes to Parkwood in London for their robotics program which allows her to walk with the help of their exoskeleton.
She explains she wanted to attend the workshop because she wants to be part of the solution for safer cycling in Huron County.
Sawhuk adds her recovery has come along a lot faster than most people had predicted but there are still a lot of challenges.
She doesn't know how far she can progress but she's pushing the limits as much as possible.
She also points out given the progress in the knowledge and science around spinal chord injuries her chances of recovery now are much better than they were even ten years ago.
