Governor General Praises Community Foundation Of Grey Bruce

The Governor General of Canada had high praise for the efforts of the Community Foundation of Grey Bruce.

His Excellency David Johnston was in Owen Sound-area today.

The Community Foundation of Grey Bruce raises money for educational bursaries so young people have the opportunity for a post secondary education they otherwise might not have.

Johnston has been advocating what he calls his Smart and Caring education initiative.

"My hope for 2017, our 150th birthday would be that, at a birthday you make a gift and the gift would be how do each of us in our own neighbourhoods, our own communities make them smart and more caring so that other people can enjoy the wonderful life most Canadians have," said Johnston in an interview after his address to the Community Foundation.

He says Canada is unparalleled in its acceptance of immigrants, which makes the country great.

"We are probably the most diverse population in the world today," says Johnston. "It works because we have been able to say come with willingness to work hard, educate yourself and your children and keep your cultural heritage and make it part of this whole."

Earlier Johnston was in Meaford for the unveiling of the town's new coat of arms.

He also presented the Grey and Simcoe Foresters with new Colours in a ceremony in Owen Sound.

They're considered the most significant possession of an infantry regiment.
