A Southgate citizens group concerned about the high number of gravel pits near Holstein has asked council for its support.
The group known as ENGAGE (Egremont Group Concerned About Gravel) is particularly concerned about a proposed pit known as the Peyton Pit.
ENGAGE President Doug Karrow says he is not sure of the current status of the pit application, but there are currently seven approved or proposed pits in the Holstein area, north of Mount Forest.
Karrow claims only 13% of their approved annual tonnage is being used, and there should be some requirement to prove the need for new pits.
He asked Southgate council to make sure a long list of unresolved issues are addressed before council gives its blessing to the proposed Peyton Pit.
