Owen Sound Police Awards Recognize Bravery

Owen Sound Police Services has recognized citizens who put their lives on the line to help others.

Chief Bill Sornberger presented The Chiefs Citation Awards to four people.

Tyler Frank saved the life of an elderly man who was unconscious outside at 4am in -13 C weather. The 19-year-old carried the elderly man into a nearby doorway and kept him warm.

"He had nothing on a little thin coat no gloves no hat, frost bitten fingers, could not move them so I had to carry him in myself, lay him down threw my coat over him, gave him everything I had, gloves, hat and stayed with him until the paramedics came," says Frank.

Officials say if Frank hadn't have acted the way he did, the man would likely have died.

A second recipient of the award, Todd Boddy was asleep when several fires broke out in an area of Owen Sound last August 10. Boddy's unit in a ten plex was on fire. His son woke him up and Boddy found several people trapped in an alley outside unable to escape over a six foot fence. Risking his own life, he helped them climb over.

"I do appreciate the recognition. I don't see myself as much of a hero I guess, but I was just helping people that needed help," says Boddy.

The two other award recipients are Grey County paramedics who responded to that same fire. When Nicholas Maus and Kyle Stewart arrived one of the houses in flames still had people inside. Maus and Stewart were able to rouse them and get them out. Stewart says they just did what they had to do.

"We do this job because of the love of this job and when you get put into a situation like that, it was above our normal paramedic duties that day for sure, we put ourselves at risk. We knew the possibilities of what could happen but we still.. I wouldn't change my actions," says Stewart.

Maus says he's just happy everyone got out safely.

"It was a day that stood out for obvious reasons in our minds but like I said, just glad we were able to help out," says Maus.
