Huron Shoreline Management Committee Examining Climate Effects

Climate change continues to generate a lot of discussion at meetings of the Huron Shoreline Management Committee.

The Supervisor of Water Planning for the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority explains one of the specific things they are looking at is the impact of climate change on the "recession rate."

That's how much, on average, the lake bank erodes towards the land on a yearly average.

Geoff Cabe adds that erosion does not occur on a consistent or predictable rate, it depends on many variables, and is done over a long period of time.

From 1973 until 2007, for example, it takes into consideration the low lake levels in the past and the higher lake levels in the 70s and the 80s.

Cabe adds another important impact of climate change is the amount of ice cover on the lake over the winter. At this point, that trend is downward, meaning less ice cover on the lake over the winter.
