Fire ripped through a Port Elgin home Monday evening, causing extensive damage.
Firefighters from both Port Elgin and Southampton stations of the Saugeen Shores Fire Department responded around 8:45 to reports of fire in the vinyl siding of a home on Mill Creek Road.
Fire Chief Phil Eagleson says fire crews arrived to find the two-storey home fully engulfed, with the flames shooting through the roof.
Eagleson says more than 50 firefighters responded to the scene, attacking the fire from the ground, as well as using an aerial ladder, adding there were no injuries.
"Two occupants of the home were at home at the time and they witnessed the fire and able to get out," says Eagleson. "They called 911 quickly and we had a quick response and we were able to save what was left of the home."
Eagleson says it's too early to determine a cause of the fire, but says indications are the fire may have started on the outside of the home and spread to the inside.
He says there will be a full investigation to find the cause, adding there's no official damage estimate yet, though he predicts that figure will be in excess of $100,000.
