Lucknow Residents: Bring Back Curbside Pick-Up of Yard Waste

Some residents in Lucknow aren't too happy about the Municipality's decision to remove curbside pick-up of yard waste.

The twice-a-week pick-up was replaced with a drop-off depot location instead but as Lucknow resident Dolores Sokoloski points out, many people in town can't dispose of yard waste on their own because they either don't drive or don't have the physical help to do so.

And this rings especially true with the elderly population.

A petition of more than 230 signatures was presented to Huron-Kinloss Council in a bid to have curbside pick-up in Lucknow re-instated.

"Once a month we'd be happy, once a month we'd be great. I'm hoping we'll get it," says Dolores Sokoloski, a resident of Lucknow. "What we want to do is help the citizens and the seniors in our town, make it easier on them. Our taxes are going up, but we're not getting any more satisfaction."

And it seems the removal of curbside pick-up of yard waste isn't the only issue plaguing local residents.

Lucknow resident, Norm Morris, says there's been damage to many boulevards from winter maintenance vehicles.

"I've seen that personally, I've seen damage being caused and then I've seen the same guy come about three or four days later correcting his approach to go onto the sidewalk so, there is progress but there's a lot to go," says Morris.

Morris says he's just glad to see that at least some progress is being made to repair damaged boulevards.

As for curbside collection of yard waste in Lucknow, the Director of Public Works is expected to provide a report (based on direction from council) at the next Huron-Kinloss Council meeting on June 6th, 2016.
