The new cancer centre at Owen Sound Regional Hospital is officially open.
Doctors, nurses, patients and donors joined municipal government officials for the grand opening of Grey-Bruce Health Service’s new Cancer Centre located at the Owen Sound Regional Hospital.
Now 40% bigger, the new cancer centre is equipped with two chemotherapy rooms, a waiting room and state-of-the-art chemotherapy pharmacy which, according to President and CEO Lance Thurston, makes the department much safer.
"The chemo drugs that are used for patients are highly, highly toxic for the people who are handling them, they have to mix certain drugs depending on the patient," says Thurston. "They used to have to run that [drugs] up and down the stairway, from the basement up to the second level and you could have a trip, you could have fall, you could have a spill."
All oncology services within the new cancer treatment centre are now all together on the same floor whereas before, the various services were spread across three different floors.
Bruce Power came in as the largest donor, kicking in more than $1-million.
