A Grade 2 class from Central Perth Public School in Wartburg, near Stratford, is doing what it can to help those affected by the Fort McMurray fire.
Teacher Laura Inglis-Eickmeier says the idea of holding a bake sale today evolved from a discussion earlier this week.
"I knew that my kids were going to have heard the radio and heard their parents talking and have some conversations at home. And I wanted them to have space in the classroom where they can talk about it," says Inglis-Eickmeier.
The discussion centered around a children's book called the "Little Hummingbird" with the message "I do what I can."
"So we talked in our class about when something bad happens that you look for the helpers and they decided they want to be a helper," says Inglis-Eickmeier.
The bake sale was supplemented with baked goods from area restaurants after the class shared the idea on social media.
In the end, today's Grade 2 bake sale at Central Perth raised $800 and the money is being donated to the Red Cross and that donation, as others, will be matched by the federal government.
After the endeavor, the class put out a challenge to other classrooms across Canada.
@cknxnews We had a bake sale to raise money for FortMac. We challenge classes across Canada to do the same. #kidshelpymm #FortMacFire
